Not Dizzy But Off-Balance

From time to time you may suddenly feel light-headed or off-balance. You may be aware of time slowing down or seem to be moving at unusual speeds. More often than not, you only have the feeling that you or your environment are spinning to some degree. This is like to be a manifestation of vertigo. Vertigo is a very serious problem and should not be ignored.

Vertigo is not simply dizziness but can be described as a sensation of being unsteady. For some people dizziness can be a difficult experience where the person feels they are moving in slow motion. It is not uncommon for someone with vertigo to lose balance and then feel like they are coming to pieces. A sensation of being out of place while walking, talking, or operating a computer is a classic symptom associated with vertigo.

The location and intensity of the vertigo will vary with each person. In some cases the vertigo can affect only one ear or both ears at a time. There are two types of vertigo, central vertigo and peripheral vertigo. Central vertigo is when one ear has the feeling of being spinning in one direction while the other is feeling fine. Peripheral vertigo can be caused by the damage to the inner ear, middle ear or the nerves that link both ears.

If you or your family member has ever had dizziness, vertigo, or lightheadedness it is important that you report any new symptoms to your doctor. The symptoms of dizziness, vertigo, or lightheadedness can be very similar. They are all often displayed in patients that are experiencing pain in the muscles of the head or face. Sometimes the only treatment is life support.

He will be able to determine if the reason is one of the more than 200 different conditions that have been linked to vertigo. Your doctor may even be able to determine the cause of your vertigo by reviewing your medical history.

Often, people with vertigo are unsure why they are feeling so off-balance. There are several things that can be responsible including a misaligned jaw, damaged or worn nerves in the inner ear, or a physical cause such as Meniere’s disease. Most of these conditions will resolve on their own without medical treatment, but in some cases, like Meniere’s disease, vertigo can be caused by these conditions. Treatment for your vertigo depends on the cause of your symptoms.

If your vertigo continues or get worse, you should see your doctor. He may prescribe you medications to help control your symptoms, or he may recommend physical therapy. Physical therapy can address balance issues as well as movement problems. It may include swimming, walking, balance training, or a variety of other exercises that can be done in the comfort of your own home.

It is important that you continue to receive exercise and don’t forget to eat a balanced diet. Don’t forget to drink plenty of liquids as well. Avoid activities that put excess strain on your body such as lifting, twisting, or carrying heavy objects. The more you do to improve your balance and stability, the less likely you are to have any off-balance or vertigo-related problems. Keep in mind that prevention is always better than the cure.
